Age of Chauser

Q.1 Write in brief about Chaucer or Edmund Spencer or Ben Jonson or Francis Bacon or any one.

Ben Johnson: (11 June 1572 - 16 August 1637)

His full name was Benjamin Jonson. He was an English playwright and poet. He started his career in Elizabeth and age. He became literary dictator in the jacobean age and he lost his influence in the Carolina age. He was classically educated, which means he studied Greek and Roman classical literature. In Greek he read Homer Aristophanes. In Roman he read virgil, Horace Ovid, playtus.

In his place he strictly followed classical unities that means unity of time ,unity of play, unity of actions were strictly followed in his plays. He didn't mix tragedy with comedy and these were the main difference between Ben Johnson and William Shakespeare writing.Johnson strictly followed classical unity.Ben Johnson's tragedy was totally different and comedy was totally different. It was based on tragic and comic Greek models and had followers on the rules.

He wrote only two tragedies in his entire literary career.

1.Sejanus(1603)Sejanus                               His Fall

2.Catiline (1611) Catiline

     His Conspiracy

These were the Roman tragic plays but these tragic plays felt to impress Renaissance audiences.

Tevar was influenced by Julius Caesar written by Shakespeare.William shakespear wrote on the Roman Empire, so he also wrote on the Roman Empress, but the difference was  that Julius Caesar was a very famous woman empress and the heroes he had taken were absolutely fine.Like Sejanus and Catiline This Roman Empress was not famous so this nation audience did not like it.

Life & Works:

Ben Johnson was born in 1572 in poor family and his father dies when Johnson was very young.

His mother married to a brick layer. But Johnson was admitted to Westminster school by an unknown person.

After completing his education he joined his father in his brick laying and then he joined Royal army.

Then he secured place in theatre company under enterprinuership of Philip Henslowe.

And as soon as he entered the theater company, he slowly started getting the frame.

As an actor Johnson played the role of protagonist Geronimo in the Spanish tragedy by Thomas Kyd.

His first great play was Everyman in His Humour which was written in 1598.

People appreciated this play very much, then he wrote some plays.

Bartholomew Fair (1614)

The Devil is an Ass (1616)

The Alchemist (1610)

Isle of Dogs (1597)

The Poetaster (1601)

Sejanus (1603)

Eastward Ho (1605)

Tragedy:

  Sejanus(1603)

Catiline(1611)

Comedies:

  A Tale of a Tab(written - 1596,performed - 1633)

The Isle of Dogs (w-1597)

Every man in His Humour

Every man Out of His Humour

Cythia's Reveals or The Fountain of self Love

The Poetaster (p -1601)

The Silent Woman or Epicoence.

Ben Johnson was one such playwright who made the famous Masques and Anti Masques. And the public of England at that time liked such a place very much.Ben Johnson's plays were always full of satire and humor which people liked very much.James 1 also enjoyed Ben Johnson's play a lot. King James 1 provided royal patronage to Ben Johnson. So he used to write and perform Masques and Anti Masques for James 1. James provided him a pension of 100 marks yearly and Ben Johnson is considered as first poet Laureate of England.

Ben Johnson was always been a controversial writer. Having short temper and volatile  nature.

In the year 1597, he wrote a controversial play called Isle of Dogs and in this play he satirized Monarchy and also on Queen Elizabeth. After which he had to face many difficulties.

In one year he killed his follow actor Gabriel Spencer in a duel. But because of contacts he managed to escape being hanged. Then in the year 1601 he wrote another controversial play, The Poetaster, in which he sateris his rivals John Master and Thomas Decker. Then he wrote two controversial plays .

Selected poems of Ben Johnson: Ben Johnson is a for probably far better known today for his career as a contemporary rival of the bard for the hearts and minds of Elizabeth era theatergoers. Indeed, is big it as adrama test everyman in his humor actually featured a young actor named will Shakespeare. That success was followed by other stage works which are still performed today including Volpone, Bartholomew Fair, and The Alchemist.

conclusion: By 1623, his fame had diminished in the Royal Court and in 1628 he suffered a stroke, due to which he became ill forever. His death on 16 August 1637, after which he was buried in Best Minister B.

His play Every Man in Humour and Volpone is very famous even today. The places he wrote were Volphore, Barthlomew Fair and the Alchemist in place among British society per satire.Ben Johnson was the first writer of his time to have his own place published on his expense. It was a very common thing in those days.Ben Johnson's plays may have been less famous than Shakespeare's, but many poets and play writers followed him and made him their mentor.

And these people broughtSons of Ben and Types of Ben This was a very famous place writer who also wrote the Elizabethan Age and Jacobean age.But he got more fame in the Jacobian Age.

A tale of tub creative & critical

Hello,

I'm  Riddhi Rathod student of English Department in MKBU. This blog is a given by Kavisha Ma'am.

In this poetry I try to write a poem (parodical satire) on politics,

our country India we see how politics ruin our country and broke the heart of the poor. In India, politicians are Like holy cows. We saw that People around us always believe in the wrong commitments which were given by Our government.

The government takes away votes by making false promises to the people.

Religious fervour and 'A Tale of Tub'

      A Tale of Tub

Hello,

This blog is based on "Religious Fervour and A Tale of  Tub". This blog is given by Kavisha ma'am Department of English in Mkbu.

We have " A Tale of Tub" by Jonathan Swift in our syllabus. It is religious satire. So, Through this blog I am going to compare the festival - " Shitala satam" With " A Tale of tub, " On the basis of my understanding.

Many people simply acknowledge that the two institutions - Science and Religion deals with different realms of human experience. Science deals with Natural world. It is based on Evidence & proof. While, Religion deals with supernatural world or we can say spiritual world. Hence, the two  be complementary.

"Shitala satam" Also known as shitala saptami. This festival is dedicated to goddess shitala. Devotees of goddess shitala in Gujarat celebrate shitala satam on the saptami tithi (seventh day in the month of shravan). This festival falls one day before Janmashtami, the birth of Lord krishna. On this day when devotees observe a vrat and follow certain rituals. By fasting, they pay tribute to goddess shitala. People do not cook fresh food on this auspicious occasion. They prepared meals on the previous day.  It is believed that mainly women worship 'shitla Mataji' for the good health and long life of their children.

Hence, devotees worship this deity to cure disease like chickenpox and heart problems.

There are some steps which everyone followed on shitala satam vrat, including us.

  1. The food should be prepared the day before.

  2. Perform puja in front of Goddess's idol on shitala satam.

  3. After finishing puja, start your vrat.

  4. On this day food should not reheat.

Due to ritual traditions preserved in normative texts from Vedic times until the present, but also due to its great variety of local and regional practices, South Asia offers a vast richness of textual and ethnographic material on Hindu rituals. Since the Hindu gods are not always present at fixed places, they have to be invoked and addressed, and rituals and prayers are the favorite means for that. In nearly every Hindu household, people, mostly women, worship “their” gods daily; in cars, Gaṇeśa is invoked, while shopkeepers adorn a picture of the goddess Lakṣmī with flowers and incense. Along with this lively everyday religiosity, there are special religious occasions for rituals—festivals, pilgrimages, or life-cycle rituals. There are elaborate rituals with a long tradition involving many well-educated Brahmins, but also a great number of small, folk rituals performed by individuals; there are old Vedic rituals that are still performed today.

  • Try to connect your understanding and interpretation of such religious practices with Swift's work.

Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), the greatest satirist of the Enlightenment Movement and of all times, worked as a churchman over 30 years. He was ordained Anglican priest, obtaining a small parish in Northern Ireland for about a year.  Swift became Chaplain to Lord Berkeley and was instituted as Vicar to Laracor, Agher, and Rathbeggan just outside Dublin. Swift was appointed Dean of St Patrick’s in Dublin, and stayed in that position until 1742, when he resigned due to poor health. As a cleric, he was devoted to his duty, preparing his sermons arduously, serving his congregation full-heartedly, and defending the Church of Ireland militantly. However, his attitude toward church and religion was contradictory. Christianity to him, besides being a profession, was more like a choice in dilemma. An unwavering Enlightener, he never gave up his right of criticizing religion, especially the evil practices of churchmen and dissension among different branches. His criticism can be seen in his religious essays, as well as in Gulliver’s Travels, a mastery satire of all the time.

Conclusion: -

Conclusion :

The Criticism of Swift experienced an enlarging and deepening process: from accepting one sect of Christianity with conditions, to admitting only its social function, to negation of all religions, the sword of his satire is thrust deeper and deeper. That is closely related to his Enlightenment thinking. After all, which religion can withstand the scrutiny of such a thorough and sharp critical mind?

Visting Victoria park

“Nature is always wears the colors of the spirit.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Nature is such a priceless gift to humans that humans can never repay. To know nature, we can only know it fully if we have to enjoy it. In our study comes Romanticism in which the poets fully understood nature.

PURPOSE OF THE VISITING VICTORIA PARK:-

We go for academic for academic purpose too but we enjoy nature with our soul and experience what romanticism is. Also want to make a good memory with classmates and seniors. How romantic poets writers inspire themselves to write marvelous and beautiful poetry on nature. In Romanticism main characteristics is also nature and it's elements.

INFLUENCE OF THE NATURE AND EXPERIENCE OF MINE:-

When we enter in the Victoria park just watched for a while. All around are green trees only trees. when I see this beautiful lake, trees, and insects, I am just lost in them.

My Experience at Victoria park was amazing. We have lots of fun here.

On that day we observe every kind of nature. We can easily understand that Romanticism poets elements on nature. That was such a good trip with Yesha Ma'am. It's too memorable for me.

Thinking Skill

This blog is based on 'How to improve Thinking Skill?' For that our Department of English organised workshop. In this workshop Semester 1 & 3 students are participated. For this we called Milan Pandya sir.

About Professor Milan Pandya :-

Professor Milan Pandya is a teacher, PhD student, trainer and educator. He is in field of thinking skills. He has his hand tight on Critical, Creative and Design Thinking, English Language Teaching & Communication Skills.

WHAT WE LEARNT?

FIRST DAY:-

(13 August 2022)

There are so many types of thinking, but the major type of thinking are only three:-

  • Critical thinking

  • Creative thinking

  • Design thinking

Some teachers gave examples that sometimes it's complicated to understand but sir start with very interesting example of critical thinking.

this beautiful photo of Kareena Kapoor Khan she is smiling cause in this soap ad this soap has discount of 3 rupees. But as we know that she is like millionaire her husband family belongs to nawab so there is no logic that she is smiling on 3 rupees discount. Here we need to think critically that she is smiling cause for this ad she got paid crores of rupees. That's how we think critically and sir also gave us this logical definition or we can say Mantra how to criticize something.

Sir gave also next example of serial scene 'Yeh hai Mahobbatein'. This serial Yeh hai Mahobbatein shows that the wife has a fractured hand and her husband is helping her to straighten her saree. Secondly we can see that the heroine is well prepared and make up.

He gave another example of about Satish Shah's Twitter post.

In his Twitter post he climbed that this is the same tiranga his mother got during quite India movement in 1942. If we know history about Indian dhwaj with clearly notice that design of this tiranga declared in 1947. Before the 1947 we had different three types of tiranga design during the different years.

Sir gave another definition of thinking that he made and follow.

" Thinking about thinking in           order to improve thinking."

Other more examples given by Milan sir. Here I shared some pictures which was sawn by sir.

After workshop session we take a picture with Milan sir.
